Paper Kokeshi Craft

Paper Kokeshi Craft
Kokeshi dolls are a popular craft in Japan, and have been made for centuries. Traditionally made of wood, these dolls were carefully crafted by wood cutters in the 19th century as souvenirs for tourists and visitors, though it is also speculated that they originated from the wooden tools used by massage therapists in hot springs. Today, Kokeshi dolls are a popular paper craft made by children country-wide in schools and social settings, and are a trademark of Japanese craftsmanship.

Significance

These dolls are a staple of Japanese tradition and history, as they have evolved from simple designs sold to tourists more than a century ago to special toys for children, to handcrafted keepsakes still sought after today. Even the word "kokeshi" itself is a blend of terms given to wooden dolls made around the time. It's thought that at one time, Kokeshi dolls were a sign of spiritual significance, and granted wishes of good health to children.

Appearance

Frequently made of wood, these dolls have over-sized heads, brightly colored kimonos and elaborately painted faces. In recent times, kokeshis have also become popular paper crafts and can be designed with thick card stock bent at the ends to allow the doll to be propped up upon completion. Some Kokeshi are elaborate and have limbs, hair and even hats, while more traditional dolls have cylindrical, limbless bodies and specific kimonos based on the locale of the doll maker.

Kokeshi Collecting

Because the materials used to make these dolls, primarily the paper kokeshi, is prevalent and inexpensive, kokeshi collecting is a popular pastime for adults and children alike. Often the dolls are passed down through generations, which adds its own special significance and importance. Any given doll collection showcases the beautiful handiwork of dozens of artists, from established craftsman to newly aspiring children artists, and their small size allows for the collection to grow into the dozens.

Other Kokeshi Craft

In addition to the dolls, Kokeshi designs have evolved to include many other paper products, including stationary, bookmarks and puzzles. These designs often depict more modernly designed Kokeshi geared towards children, with bright, vivid colors and happy expressions. These projects are used frequently as social activities in schools, and as designs for children's school supplies. Kokeshi dolls and kokeshi-inspired designs have even crossed oceans to become popular crafts and collectibles in Europe and the Americas.
